When you’re out in the wild trying to fight for your life, there are a few key things that you’ll need to keep in mind: Shelter, food, and (most importantly) water. The human body needs water to survive, and there’s simply no getting around this fact. Your body will effectively shut down without proper water making its way into it and because of this, you need to be aware of the best way to filter water in order to have the best chance at survival.

Having pre-filtered water is obviously the most ideal situation to be in, but you likely won’t always have access to this stuff when you’re out in a survival setting. You’ll very likely need to filter water yourself and drink that to keep your body moving, and if/when it comes down to this, will you know exactly how to make filtered water?

If you said no, thankfully you’ve come to the right place. Today, we’ll be looking at a few different ways for how to make water filter properly and effectively, and without further ado, here’s what we’ve come up with.

One of the most recent inventions in the water filtering world is that of the LifeStraw, and although it doesn’t look like a lot at first, it’s one of our favorite tools for filtering out water when on the go.

The LifeStraw is an incredibly small and compact product, and that’s because it’s essentially a thick straw. However, what’s insanely cool about the LifeStraw is the fact that it features a filter so that you can stick this into pretty much any body of water and drink it up without worrying about getting sick.

LifeStraw was first introduced back in 2005, but it recently picked up a ton of steam over the past couple of years. LifeStraw is capable of removing 99.9999% of all waterborne bacteria, and it absolutely soars past the EPA standards that are set in place for all water filtering products.

You can expect the LifeStraw to filter through around 1000 liters of water without the need for iodine, chlorine, or other harmful chemicals that you sometimes find in competing filter solutions.

While the LifeStraw isn’t your best bet if you want to store a lot of filtered water and carry it with you, it is stupidly functional considering how portable it is.

Walking around and find some sort of waterbody that you want to use? Simply open up the end of the LifeStraw, stick it into the water, and start sipping. It’s an ingenious invention, and it’s something that seriously every single prepper reading this should own if you don’t already.

You can usually pick up the LifeStraw for around $15 or so, and at that price, this is an absolute steal.

Water bottles with built-in filters

If you like the idea of being able to easily filter water while on the road but want a way to store a lot of water at once so you can have a solid amount of filtered water with you at all times?

There are a number of water bottles out there that feature built-in filters that allow you to do just this, and one of the our favorite ones actually comes once again from LifeStraw. The particular product in question is LifeStraw’s Go Water Bottle with Integrated LifeStraw Filter, and it’s essentially a water bottle with a LifeStraw built into it.

The bottle here holds up to 23-ounces of water at once, and the durable design helps to ensure that you won’t ever deal with any unwanted leaks, spills, etc. The bottle is also made out of BPA-free Tritan, and LifeStraw also makes replacement filters if you want to stock up on these for plenty of filtered water for many years to come.

Similar to the normal LifeStraw above, the LifeStraw water bottle gets rid of 99.9999% of any waterborne bacteria, and this means that you can effectively turn any water source into one that’s completely safe to drink.

You can purchase the LifeStraw Go Water Bottle in five different colors, and although it is a bit more expensive than the singular LifeStraw, it’s money well-spent if you want top-of-the-line filtering in a body that can hold 23-ounces of water at time.

Traditional Microfilter

LifeStraw’s product are undeniably some of the best currently available when it comes to water filtration systems, but if you like the idea of using a more traditional and basic microfilter, that’s still a really great way to go for turning any body of water into a source of healthy and tasty water to keep your body functioning the way that you need it to.

There are a wide array of different microfilmers that you can choose from, but we’ve found that the MSR MiniWorks EX Microfilter is one of the best options out there for the price. MSR’s option works in a similar manner to what you’ll find with pretty much any other microfilter, as it filters water by sucking it up and having it go through a filtration system built into its reservoir.

The combination of carbon and ceramic keep the MSR filter extremely durable and sturdy, so even if you’re going through some rough and tumble terrain, you won’t need to worry about this thing cracking under even the greatest amount of pressure.

MSR’s solution is rated to remove 99.9999% of bacteria and 99.9% protozoa, and those are undeniably some seriously impressive numbers. You can easily clean the filter without any tools to keep it working as well as it possibly can, and the carbon core addition helps to keep your water tasting phenomenally.

The higher price could be a turnoff for certain buyers, but if you want something that will provide you with a lot of room to store filtered water while on the move, this is a great option. You’ll be able to fill up a number of water bottles with MSR’s microfilter, and although it may not be as convenient as the LifeStraw water bottle, some people reading this would likely be willing to give up some convenience for more water storage.

Final Thoughts

With that said, those are our 3 suggestions for the best way to filter water. One of these isn’t necessarily better than the rest, as each of these solutions can be the best in specific scenarios and settings. Whether you choose to buy just one or all three of the items suggested on this list, you can be rest assured with the fact that you’ve got your hands on one of the best water filtration products around.
