The best foods for doomsday prepping are the ones that will last the longest, provide the most nutrients, and be the easiest to prepare. If you are already a prepper, then you know all of this though. If you are new to the field of doomsday prepping, you may wonder what all the fuss is about.

Not So Crazy Anymore

Once upon a time doomsday preppers were considered conspiracy theorists, crazies, wingnuts, recluses wearing foil hats and all that. Now, climate change is wreaking havoc on our environment and world war three is no longer looking like an impossibility.

At the rate we are going as a society, it is now silly to laugh off apocalypse. More and more people are wondering if prepping is actually quite brilliant. The reality is: anything. Anything could happen next.

In that case, whether you are a hardened doomsday prepper or new to the club, your next question may be what is the best food to store for survival?

The List

1.Canned meat

You will need protein to get you through the tough times. A body without protein loses energy and muscle mass. You will need both of those attributes during an apocalypse. The human body processes animal protein more efficiently than it does any other protein, so stick with canned meat.

You can buy many varieties of canned meat online, or you can prepare it yourself. If you are looking for a long shelf life, though, and a consistent flavor profile, you are going to want to go with Spam. It sounds silly, but Spam got Hawaii through isolation during WWII, and it can get you through the apocalypse.

2.Powdered Milk

We recently posted an article on the best types of powdered milk you can buy for long term storage. There is a wide variety of options online, and it will depend on what fat content you are looking for and how much you want to buy at one time.

There are many options, but if you are serious about survival during a natural disaster or economic collapse, you will want a lot of full fat milk. Again, life will turn upside down in the event of apocalypse, so you will want to store the fat you need for energy to survive in that upside down world.

3.Canned Fruits and Veggies

Yes, your mother told you your entire childhood that you had to eat your fruits and veggies if you wanted to grow big and strong. Now you have grown big and strong, and we are telling you you still have to eat your fruits and veggies.

The last thing you want is to be vitamin deficient. Keep a large store of a wide variety of your plant based foods, and you won’t find yourself sallow looking and lethargic feeling. Also, you will find your digestion more regular.

This recommendation is a follow up to the fruits and veggies above. In the interest of staying regular, you’ll want to load up on fiber. Beans are a plant based source of fiber and protein that will keep your muscles strong and keep your digestion flowing.

Members of your family or team during a doomsday event may not be pleased with the immediate results of your bean based diet, but you will be happy to not be all backed up. As a bonus, because they are plant based, beans are a source of protein that will last much longer than your canned meat.

Whole grains work together with your proteins to keep your energy stores up for longer. You can store boxed or bagged crackers and cereals to combine with beans or powdered milk. This will depend on your mood and your appetite.

The nice thing about crackers and cereals is that they have a long shelf life. Also, they can be eaten with literally any meal or snack. Whole grains are an additional source of fiber, so building them into your diet is a great way to stay regular as well.

Final Thoughts

When thinking about the best food to stockpile for survival, you want to hit a couple of points.

First, you ask yourself if you are willing to eat anything that is about to meet its expiration date. That could turn out to be a lot of spam.

Second, you need to think about how much room you have to store. You do not want to buy a bunch of food that will have to sit on your kitchen floor awaiting economic collapse.

And finally, you want to make sure you have a sense of how all the food you buy will work together. Buy food that is flexible and diverse. That way,  you will have a lot longer to go before you become bored with your food stores.
