Your will to be a prepper is not limited by where you choose to live, and as such, there are people in the prepper community that live in all different areas of the world. There are plenty of individuals that choose to live in more rural areas, but there are others that prefer living in more urban parts of the country. Today, we’re talking to that latter group with some tips of how to bug out of a city.
Bugging out is done when you need to escape your immediate area and find shelter somewhere else. You might have to do this as a result of a natural disaster, economic collapse, or a number of other things. Whatever the situation, if you live in a city and need to get the hell out of dodge, there are certain tips and tricks that you need to be aware of to ensure your maximum chance of survival.
Trying to bug out of a city is an entirely different ball game from doing so in the city, and as such, it comes with its own set of challenges and obstacles.
There are a number of different techniques we could talk about, but here are the 4 most important ones that you need to know.
One thing that every person needs to do is sleep. No matter where you live, how old you are, your gender, or whatever else, escaping sleep is impossible.
If you’re in a city and trying to find a safe place to sleep, you might first be inclined to go inside the nearest building and call home. While this will give you shelter from the outside, we don’t advise doing this.
Your biggest obstacle/threat in a city are the people around you, and choosing to camp out at ground level will leave you the most vulnerable to an attack from someone else.
Because of this, we advise seeking a roof of a two-story building. This will give you a decent height above the ground without putting you insanely high up, and it’ll keep you hidden from most predators.
Chances are you’ll be able to find the roof of a building that’s got some amount of shelter by default, and with a bit of handiwork and imagination, you’ll likely be able to work with your surroundings to create something that’ll keep you warm and dry throughout the night.
Staying hidden with urban camo
A lot of people trying to escape the city will likely want to go in and out of surrounding woods for shelter, food, and other items, and while this is a great tactic to keep under your belt, you’ll need to make sure you’re wearing the right clothes for the job.
To do this, we recommend outfitting yourself with urban camo.
Urban camo can take a lot of different forms, but for the most part, it’s clothing that works and makes sense both in the woods and in an urban area.
Trying to find a set of clothing that makes sense for both areas can be difficult at first, but with some careful planning and shopping around, you can quickly put together an outfit that’ll keep you protected and discrete no matter where you go.
For starters, you’ll want to pick up some green pants, a brown t-shirt, and a black pullover shirt or jacket in case it’s cool out. Combine this with trail shoes that look classy but still offer ample traction for wooded areas, and you’ll be rocking a great start for your urban camo setup.
You can choose to just rock this, but if you want to go the extra mile for adventures in the woods, we suggest getting a long sleeve camo shirt that’ll keep you even more hidden among the trees and shrubbery. Also, buying a shirt that’s thin will make it easy to store it away when you’re back in the city.
Get familiar with your surroundings
Should a situation arise that will cause mass hysteria among a large group of people, you’ll want to have a plan for getting out of your apartment or house and to where you want or need to be as fast as possible.
Cities are often large, expansive areas with a lot of twists and turns, and if you aren’t familiar with the area you’re in, trying to get out of it in a flash will be near impossible.
Because of this, we suggest getting as familiar with your city as possible so that you can get out of there faster than anyone else.
What parts of your area are considered safe? Are there any bad parts of town? What’s the nearest route to the woods? What parts are usually the busiest, and at what times during the day?
Knowing all of this info will give you a better idea of how to plan your escape path, and should disaster ever strike, it’ll make you considerably more prepared than everyone around you.
Have a backup shelter ready
If you’d like to create a more permanent shelter in addition to your house/apartment, you’ll want to keep it within a couple hours hike of where you currently live. This will make it much easier to transport supplies from location to location, and it’ll still be far enough away so that possible attackers won’t immediately know where to look for you.
Knowing how to bug out of a city is crucial for any prepper that chooses to live in an urban area, and while there’s more to know aside from what we covered here, this should give you a great place to get started. Being a prepper in a city is a very unique experience, and with these tips at hand, doing so should be considerably easier if you ever find yourself in a SHTF situation.
